|Condition assessment comment:
||Herb to grass ratio averaged at 55% across the site, herb coverage was greater at the top of the slope. 13 positive indicator species were recorded, only one species from the 1994 survey was not picked up – hairy violet. There were 6 species frequent including Upright Brome, 5 occasional and 2 rare. This attribute is favourable. The sward condition was good, average sward height was 4.5cm so within the desirable range of 2-15cm. Litter content (dead grass etc) was less than 25% and bare ground was less than 10%. There were significant bare ground with no re-colonisation of grassland species on the steep slopes around recent scrub clearance. The failing attribute for this SSSI are the negative indicators. Fabric areas are not included. The slopes should ideally be supporting approximately 2 ha of notified CG3 grassland, but even with the significant scrub/bracken removal in the last 2 years there is still about 25 to 30% coverage. The target is 5% cover. This target may be unrealistic considering the topography of the site and may be advisable to accept a 15% cover. HLS capital work with scrub and bracken removal will continue.
