Staff member responsible for SSSI unit: Paul Hackman

Unit ID: 1016352

Unit area: 9 hectares

Main habitat: Calcareous grassland - lowland

Condition:   Unfavourable no change

Latest assessment date: 15 November 2012

Reason for adverse condition: Undergrazing

Condition assessment comment: The unit has a good number of positive indicator species (Freq 6, Occ 5 and Rare 7), medium/long (but still favourable) sward height (11 cm) and appropriate levels of bare ground. However, grass litter (49%), scrub in the sward (frequent) and herb to grass ratio (36%) were all at unfavourable levels. These figures are similar to the 2010 (unfavourable) assessment, although herb to grass ratio and sward length seem to be worse. This may be explained by the particularly dry and sunny 2010 summer compared to the exceptionally wet 2012 summer where swards were generally longer and more grassy. Juniper bushes are present and new cuttings have been planted out, these should probably be added as an interest feature through the Detailed Notification Review. Sporadic positive management (both grazing and scrub clearance) is taking place which is preventing the unit from getting worse but more is required before this unit can be considered as recovering. Hence the unit is unfavourable no change.
