Reason for adverse condition

North East  Durham  Wear Valley  Broadleaved, mixed and yew woodland - lowland  Ruth Jackson  1010038  12.38  13 Sep 2010  Unfavourable recovering  The extent of the unit has not changed since the site was notified; Canopy structure on the majority of the unit is generally even aged and cover is within the assessment limits of 30-90% of the stand area, this also includes standing and fallen deadwood of varying size from small branches to large trunks. Understory is fairly good and consists of Bird cherry, Grey willow, Elder, Hawthorn, Ash, Rowan and some Guilder rose, no planting was seen in the SSSI area and no recent program of coppice had taken place . Ground flora indicators are present that represent W6 woodland but is being dominated by Himalayan balsam throughout the unit. A large stand of mature alder in the old riverbed in the northern part of the unit appears to be dying and needs investigated to find the cause Regeneration on site is with the trees and shrubs listed above with seedlings and saplings but no alder was seen to have regenerated; Sycamore was common in the stand and present in the seedling, sapling and mature stage but seems to be in control with the current management. Because of the current program of management under HLS, the site is classed as unfavourable recovering for the amount of negative indicators present.
North East  Durham  Wear Valley  Standing open water and canals  Ruth Jackson  1010037  5.51  21 Oct 2010  Favourable  This assessment relates to the breeding bird assemnblage. See detailed breeding brid survey (contracted out) in monitoring file. Whislt the assemblage list fails against the open water list, this site has significantly changed since notification, becoming more wooded, therefore a change in species is to be expected.
